STMicroelectronics (ST) has released the second-generation laser ranging intelligent sensor VL53L0, which is based on the successful FlightSense technology ™ Technology enables faster, farther, and more accurate distance measurement capabilities, significantly improving the camera performance of mobile phones and tablets, and opening up new application opportunities for the markets of intelligent robots, user detection, drones, the Internet of Things, and wearable devices.
The exterior dimensions of 4.4 x 2.4 x 1mm make the VL53L0 the world's smallest Time of Flight (ToF) module, while also being an intelligent ranging sensor that integrates a 940nm VCSEL light source, SPAD photon detector, and advanced microcontroller (managing the entire ranging function). The VL53L0 module, which emits light at 940 nanometers and is equipped with advanced infrared filters, has excellent anti-interference performance against ambient light in the industry, reducing the impact of ambient light to a low level. In terminal product applications, embedded microcontrollers and digital algorithms can greatly reduce host processing load and system power consumption.

STMicroelectronics launched a fully integrated ToF ranging smart sensor in 2014, which has been successfully applied to laser assisted autofocus function by multiple OEM manufacturers. Today, with the launch of the new generation product VL53L0, STMicroelectronics is setting a new benchmark for ranging product performance, opening up new opportunities for developers to develop new applications in the smart robot and IoT markets
VL53L0 is capable of completing all measurement operations within one frame, typically in less than 30ms and at a distance of less than 2 meters. This distance measurement performance allows the camera system to instantly focus in both camera and continuous shooting modes, and even maintain the same performance in low light or low contrast scenes. However, for camera systems without ToF technology, low light or low contrast scenes are a huge challenge. Due to its excellent distance measurement, VL53L0 can also enhance the performance of smartphone applications, including dual camera depth maps. STMicroelectronics' VL53L0 module is simple and easy to use (6 effective pins), providing I2C interface, equipped with a complete set of API drivers and technical documentation, making system integration fast and simple. The module packaging supports reflow soldering process, complies with RoHS hazardous substance restriction standards, and is fully compatible with various glass cover plates and exterior designs.
