LSM9DS1 is a multifunctional motion sensing on-chip system. It is equipped with a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope, and a 3-axis magnetometer - with 9 degrees of freedom (9 DOF) in a single IC! The LSM9DS1 is equipped with a digital interface, but even so it is flexible: it supports I2C and SPI, making it difficult to find an unavailable microcontroller. This IMU chip is very cool, we have placed it on the quarter size distribution board you are currently viewing!
LSM9DS1 is one of the few ICs that can measure three key characteristics of motion (angular velocity, acceleration, and heading) in a single IC. By measuring these three attributes, you can gain a wealth of knowledge about the motion and direction of objects. LSM9DS1 measures each of these motion characteristics in three dimensions. This means it will generate nine data points: acceleration represented by x/y/z, angular rotation represented by x/y/z, and magnetic force represented by x/y/z. The LSM9DS1 Breakout has labels indicating the axis direction of the accelerometer and gyroscope, which share a right-hand rule relationship with each other.
Each sensor in LSM9DS1 supports a wide range: the accelerometer scale can be set to ± 2, 4, 8, or 16 g, the gyroscope supports ± 245, 500, and 2000 °/s, and the magnetometer has a scale range of ± 4, 8, 12, or 16 Gauss.
